My Game of the Year this year is obviously Uncharted 2. I enjoyed the hell out of that game. The single player was a well paced, well acted, entertaining campaign that took you through amazing locales. The multiplayer was addictive and energetic and played uniquely compared to the other shooters out there. If you own a PS3 and don’t have Uncharted 2 then what the fuck is wrong with you?
There were a number of other great games this year that deserve your attention though too. Killzone 2 came out in February and brought an incredible sense of momentum and heft to the first person genre. Not to mention the graphics. They are easily the best looking of any console game available. When I played games early in the lifecycle of the PS2 and watched the cutscenes in them I would dream of a day when I could play a game that looked as good as those CGI scenes. That dream came true for me playing Killzone 2. Rent it, enjoy it.
Arkham Asylum was another incredible game this year. When the Wolverine game came out earlier in the year and set the new bar for superhero games, Arkham came along a few months later and raised it about a thousand feet higher. If you’ve ever wanted to feel like Batman, this is the game to rent. If you’re more in the mood to blow shit up though, then get Red Faction Guerrilla. The multiplayer was solid and the campaign continually impressed me by giving me bigger and cooler tools to destroy stuff with. Finally Assassin’s Creed 2. I am about half way through the game currently and if I wasn’t incapable of finishing it this year it might just have stagged GOTY for me. I adore the story it tells and the gameplay is more of what I loved in Assassin’s Creed 1 with all of the unnecessary side-quest-fat trimmed off.
What did you guys think was your Game of the Year this year? Any games I grievously left out? Let me know if the comments.
Thanks for reading and listening in 2009.
I certainly enjoyed making Of Noobs and Men and Of Pods and Men for you guys and I can’t wait to bring you more in two thousand and ten.
Happy New Year!

I haven’t played Uncharted 2, and only have demo’d Arkham Asylum, but I would agree with this list. RF:G and AC2 are definitely my favourites. I am just glad your list wasn’t just a bunch of FPS games.
Personally, my GOTY is a portable game, but probably not the one you’re thinking of. It’s a little game called Henry Hatsworth and the Puzzling Adventure for the DS. It was fun, original, humourous and – perhaps best of all – challenging. So often these days games are watered down for a casual audience, but this game was different. For the first time in years, I was failing again and again, but I couldn’t stop playing. It was so much fun.
I vote half minute hero as game of the year, the style, new type of game play that will reoccur for years to come, not to mention the insane plot twists, and moments where you just hold on for dear god and enjoy everything that is perfection.
this does of course cover all genres and will satisfy every type of game and their corresponding enthusiasts everywhere.
MAY 2010 BE THE YEAR THE MAYANS TAKE OVER!!!
For the DS, I got to say the Legend of Zelda Spirit Tracks, I’ve been playing it whenever I haven’t been doing anything important and I’m only 3 train parts away from 100% completion, travel times are much shorter then they were in Wind Waker and Zelda has an actual personility. Then there’s the whole it’s a Zelda game factor, the only flaw would be that they made train parts obtained by treasure instead of money, it annoys the player as they made some stuff rare in your file to make you trade with friends. Of course you can’t trade with your other file. Other then that, it’s a great game.
Uncharted 2 was easily the most polished, well paced, well acted, well balanced game I have ever played. It deserves to be called game of the year, it was a perfect example of great game design.
Arkham Asylum was an unexpected and wonderful surprise. That was awesome. Killzone 2 was the coolest shooter of the year.
Uncharted Two raised the bar for action-adventure games on the PS3. Gears of War says: They did what?
